processing, preserving, storing, transporting, marketing, or selling fish or fish
products. It comprises with the following:

 1.) Marine Fisheries

It can be further divided into:

a.) Municipal Fisheries
- operate in coastal waters within 15 km from the coastline (municipal marine waters) using vessels, as well as fishing without the use of vessels of up to 3 gross tons.

IMPORTANCE OF FISHING INDUSTRY

Fisheries is a very important industry in the Philippines. Its importance is underscored by the fact that as of 1995, the Philippines ranks 12th among the largest fish producer in the world, and ranks 4th in terms of aquaculture production based on figures from FAO Yearbook 1995. The following are its importance:
1.) In terms of contribution to the National Gross Value Added (GVA) in      Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry in 1997, fisheries contributed 18.5 %.

2.) It is important because of the country’s archipelagic nature.

3.) Another reason is the Filipino’s great liking for fish. No meal is complete without fish.

FISHING INDUSTRY IN BICOL

Bicol region ranks number one in the country on the National Program for Fisher folk Registration (FishR), with a total of 94,831 fisher folk registered online, more than 30,000 ahead of its closest counterpart, Region 8 with over 61,000 according to the FishR database dated January 24, 2014.

Masbate province has the highest number of registered fisher folk with 38,019, followed by Sorsogon with 17, 471 inched closely by Camarines Sur with 17, 174. Albay, Camarines Norte and Catanduanes with 10, 745, 5,993, and 5,429 registered fisherfolk, respectively.

FISHING IN BULAN, SORSOGON, BICOL, PHILIPPINES

Inararan comes from the word “Ina” which means “mother” and “Raran” the adjacent places include J.P Laurel, Calomagon and etc. Inararan is the mother or the center of the adjacent places. This barangay uses traditional techniques in fishing such as rod and tacle, arrows and harpoons, also nets. It is a barangay where fishing is the major livelihood that can support the needs and the day-to-day lives of settlers. And, it is also a place where delicious dried fish and “tinapa” was found.

Settlers’ primary source of food is fishing. The caught fishes have sold in wet market, a place where fishes are delivered and purchased by the costumers. The fisherman from Inararan have different techniques and strategies in catching fish.

One of the best fisherman there were Mang Sante Gestiada and Bro. Lomer Lique, Mang Sante has four children and Bro. Lomer was a friend of Mang Sante who always went with him to catch fish. I had noticed what kind of livelihood they have, it was gills netting. They have several nets, nets for catching big fishes and nets for small fishes. But, those nets for catching big fishes have been kept because according to Mang Sante, “ kapag may panahon para sa malalaking isda yun ang gagamitin namin, pero ngayon ay wala naman, gagamit kami ng lambat na para sa maliliit na isda”, and he added “ minsan marami kaming nahuhuli, minsan naman uuwi kami na wala “. They have problems confronting their livelihood these ara as follows:
  1. Access to water
  2. Invasive Species
  3. Water Condition
The three (3) problems are the caused why they got lower incomes, for some reasons includes ocean current, waves and net damages.

Humans have been fishing for so many years what we have become exceptional fishermen. With the advent of technology and our increased knowledge of our planet, we have become able to track the movements of a school of fish which we have been selected specifically its sizes, the size of each fish. It is not surprising the our fishing industry has so many harmful consequences for our environment.

The biggest problem is the we have thought of the ocean as an exhaustible resources. Recently we’ve able to see and document the importance of our fishing practices. Some fishes have collapsed in such a short time that we haven’t even had time to try and save their population. But now that we are aware in our actions and the serious effects that they can have, I believe that we will be able to turn it all around and protect our oceans before it is too late.
